A workshop was held in the Postal Staff College Islamabad to make the Postal officers aware of the techniques and ideas to popularize philately (commemorative stamp-collection) among general public, especially among the school/college going children. Chief/ Senior Post Masters from 20 GPO's from all parts of the country participated in the workshop and shared their experiences.
Additional Director General Pakistan Postal Services Fazil Sattar Khan was the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the workshop. The Additional Director General distributed certificates among the participants of the workshops. In his address to the participants, Mr. Sattar emphasized the importance of philately as a healthy recreational activity which is a source of knowledge for the philatelist. He said that the commemorative stamps,being national symbols inculcate patriotic spirit among youth which ignites in them a desire to imitate the greatness of their national heroes. He surprised the audience by divulging the fact that the commemorative stamps bearing the picture of iconic young Pakistani IT specialist Arfa Karim had a record sale of 2.5 million stamps which is a clear indication of the pride, the nation puts in their national heroes.
The participants of the workshops were also informed that philately was not only a leisure activity but a source of income as well. The stamps which have some uniqueness either by virtue of its historical value, personality, sports or any event of national importance fetch huge sums for the owner of the stamp.
The resource persons at the workshops also discussed the new trends and techniques used by the postal departments of other countries to popularize philately. The methods include display of stamps at philatelic counters, seminars, stalls at schools, railway stations, airports, philatelist competitions etc. The ADG in his address apprised the participants that there is a huge potential to popularize philately in Pakistan which will increase the revenue of the Government.
A competition was also announced among the GPOs of the country. The Chief/Senior Post Masters registering highest sale of commemorative stamps from September 1 till December 31 will be awarded certificate and shields and the concerned officers will be sent on foreign trainings to further sharpen their skills.
