AIOU’s ‘Science for the Society Club’ to be launched today

Islamabad 4th  December 2013 Science for the Society Club of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will be formally launched today (Thursday December 5) for encouraging youth to develop new scientific devices to meet the country’s socio-economic needs and overcome issues like energy crisis.
Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi, Vice-Chancellor, AIOU will be the Chief Guest at the launching ceremony while President Chamber of Commerce Rawalpindi/Islamabad and other signatories will be the guests of honour. 
Science for the Society Club will involve youth for promotion of Science and Technology in the country. In addition to the AIOU’s students, the club’s facilities will be available across the board, for other students as well.  Prof. Dr. Naghmana Rashid, Chairperson, Department of Chemistry , AIOU has already been assigned the task to supervise the club, as its President.
Under the scheme, the students of AIOU and other educational institutions will be invited to give their projects that could be useful for resolving issues, being faced by the under-privilege sections of the people particularly those living in the rural areas. The idea was initiated by the vice chancellor in order to apply scientific development in the country’s overall development. The AIOU will provide necessary academic and financial support to the youth to undertake the task.

HRCP calls for the recovery of human rights activist Haider Ali

Lahore, December 02: Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed great concern at the abduction of Mr. Haider Ali, a human rights activist and Advocate. He was abducted allegedly by law enforcement agencies on November 27, 2013 when he was going back home from District Courts. Since then his whereabouts are not known.

It is worth mentioning that two HRCP activists in Balochistan had earlier been killed by unidentified assailants. Their killers have not been apprehended

HRCP has written to the Balochistan authorities for Mr Haider Ali’s immediate recovery they have also been asked to make sure that he is not physically harmed in custody.

AIOU to improve research work at M.Phil and Ph.D level

Islamabad – 2nd December 2013 Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) of the Allama Iqbal Open University(AIOU) at its 2-day meeting held here decided to take necessary measures to further improve and streamline the academic research work at M.Phil and Ph.D level.

This is a part of the University’s efforts’ for upgrading the quality and standard of education at the higher education level. The meeting discussed in details various proposals to achieve the desired objectives. 

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazir Sangi who presided over the meeting advised the officers concerned to hold quarterly meetings of BARS to evaluate the research work in systemic manner. He emphasized that the academic research should be relevant to the national problems, that help to seek their solutions. 

The board noted that most of the proposals, put forth by the relevant faculties were upto the mark.   However in some cases improvement was suggested by the Board members. The Board in its meeting approve indorse some other proposals presented by research synopsis committee. The meeting approved the final of experts of various departments for evaluating the research work at  M.Phil and Ph.D level. 

Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi, Chairman, BASR briefed the committee about the details of the research work of various departments. He said that next meeting of BASR will be held in the third week of this month in light of the directives of the Vice-Chancellor.

Islamabad – 12th  November 2013 “Allama Iqbal Open University(AIOU) will mark ‘Iqbal Day’ on November 25 at 10:00 a.m. in its main Auditorium, in this connection a special function has been arranged in which  Farzand-e-Iqbal, Justice ( R ) Dr. Javed Iqbal will deliver his keynote address on “The soul of Islamic culture” while Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms, Ahsan Iqbal will grace the occasion as a Chief Guest. Vice-Chancellor, AIOU Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi will preside over the function”

Islamabad – 11th  November 2013 Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has placed Roll-Number Slips for final exams of PGD, MA and MSc programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 of all the eligible students at its website www.aiou.edu.pk.

This was announced by Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi, Controller of Exams, He said that Roll Number Slips have already been sent to all the students by post at their given addresses. He further said that final exams of PGD, MA and M.Sc programmes will start from Monday 18th November , 2013 around the country simultaneously.

Those students, he said who have not received their Roll No. Slips so far are advised to contact the nearest Regional Office of the University or Abid Hussain Satti, Deputy Controller of Exams (Conduct) personally or at his Ph.No. 051-9250051, 9057648 for issuance of Duplicate Roll No Slip.
For duplicate Roll No Slip students are required to bring two passport size photographs duly attested by the gazetted officer.  Roll No. Slips along with Date Sheet are also being placed on AIOU website www.aiou.edu.pk for the convenience of students, he added.
            All students are also advised in their own interest to read the instructions mentioned on Roll No. Slip carefully before entering into the Examination Center.

Islamabad – 6th November 2013 “Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has scheduled its final exams of PGD, MA and M.Sc programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 from Monday 18th November , 2013 across the country simultaneously”
This was announced by Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi, Controller of Exams, AIOU. The Roll No. slips, he said are being dispatched to all the eligible/enrolled students at their given addresses by Postal Mail Service.  Those students who will not receive their Roll No. Slips till November 10, are advised to contact the nearest Regional Office of the University or Abid Hussain Satti, Deputy Controller of Exams (Conduct) personally or at his Ph.No. 051-9250051, 9057648 for issuance of Duplicate Roll No Slip.

TWO DAYS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT BAHRIA UNIVERSITY

Islamabad: A two days International Conference on `Emerging Challenges For Organizations In Developing Economies (ECODE)` has been organized  by Bahria University Islamabad on 5th & 6th November 2013. The conference is offering a platform for academicians, researchers, practitioners and students to learn and share knowledge. The conference was divided into different themes, each presenting an emerging challenge in today’s developing economies.

Governor State Bank of Pakistan, Mr. Yaseen Anwar, graced the occasion as a Chief Guest. While delivering his remarks as chief guest at the International Conference, he said that State Bank of Pakistan is a premier policy making institution, which strives to provide a congenial working environment to businesses, banks, and other stakeholders within its purview. “Having said this, the horizon of the Central Bank is much wider than that of an individual organization and hence, some of its policies may appear to be contrary to business interests. However, all our actions are always in the best national interest”.The conference was inaugurated with an opening speech by the DG Campus/Pro-Rector of BU, Rear Admiral (R) Saleem Akhtar SI(M) HI(M).

Earlier in his welcome address, Honorable Rector of Bahria University, Vice Admiral® Shahid Iqbal HI (M) expressed his gratitude to the chief guest for his presence in the ceremony. He said that the main objective of this conference is to provide a global platform for our academicians, managers, graduate students and many others who are interested in the changing perspective of management and business to disseminate their research and ideas with others. He said that in an increasingly globalised world, there is a critical need to develop guidelines and recommendations for promoting integrity in research at an international level. In the end, this conference shall serve as a fundamental and landmark occasion for all of us, guiding future perspectives of management for change and development.

The key note speakers of the conference, Prof. Dr. Murat Barkan, Rector Yasar University and Ms. Sue Reece, Pro-Vice Chancellor York. St. John University shed light on the multiple issues being confronted by business and organizations in developing economies.

The conference speakers presented their respective papers on the themes such as the recent trends in Business Management and their environments and Implementing Issues of new technologies within organizations. Prominent distinguished foreign speakers from UK, USA, Turkey, Australia, Netherlands have participated in the conference.

AIOU strengthens partnership with US Universities

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 31: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will be working on a comprehensive plan to strength it on-going cooperation with U.S Universities, seeking their academic and technical support for upgrading its various educational programmers, said Vice-Chancellor, AIOU Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi.
Dr. Sangi who was on a visit to US on the invitation of American Institute of Pakistan Studies availed the opportunity to meet the heads of various American Educational institutions and sought their collaboration in promoting E-learning and utilizing and sharing the web and online resources.
He represented the AIOU at the three-day conference on Universities’ partnership programme held in US’s State Madison. In his key-note, address at the conference’s working session, he highlighted the AIOU’s consistent efforts in promoting quality education through distance learning system.
He met with senior officials of San Jose State University (SJSU) and discussed various proposals for further strengthening their cooperation on online learning.  They will particularly focus on improving teaching methods, updating curriculum, conducting joint research, and providing faculty exchanges.
  Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi also visited the world famous, Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, New Jersey and discussed with the lab’s officials about the possibilities of bilateral cooperation in research work in field of science and technology.
The Bell Lab is world's premier Research & Development institution with 13 the Nobel Prize recipients - the most of any institution in the world. He was given an official Bell Labs Showcase tour by a senior member of Technical Staff Dr. Carl Nuzman. He was briefed about various research and development activities and laboratories, says a message received here Monday. 
Dr. Sangi was shown some most famous scientific inventions including the original telephone, first transistor, Telstar Satellite, Fiber Optic Cables and Laser, motion video which were all invented in Ball Labs.

He met the scientists and engineers of the Lab and discussed with them the available avenues of bilateral cooperation and sharing of experience and expertise in the development of Laboratories in Pakistan. Muslim scientists at Bell Labs hosted a lunch in his honor.
Dr. Nazir Sangi also visited the famous educational institution, the Baytul Iman Academy in the city and delivered a community Lecture on "Educating the Muslim World: Challenges and Solutions", The Baytul-Iman Academy enjoys high reputation whose students have won several trophies in New Jersey Science Olympiads. This event was jointly organized by Baytul-Iman Academy and The Citizens Foundation which is running over 900 non-profit schools in Pakistan.
The audience was enthralled by the extra-ordinary progress made by AIOU during his tenure. A question-answer session ensued after the lecture. The representative of the City Foundation Dr. Ahmed Naji proposed that their school facilities could be utilized after school hours (afternoon and evening) by AIOU while AIOU techniques and processes can be used by the foundation.
The Mayor of Hazlet Township - Mr. Joe Belasco also called on the vice chancellor and conveyed his best wishes and cooperation in the development of education sector. A local business leader Capt. Mohammed Tahir assured using personal influence in seeking USAID’s support for the university’s development projects.
During his stay in US, Dr. Sangi also visited Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, and the largest in the State.  He gave a lecture on "Economics of Mass Education. His lecture was much appreciated and met with spontaneous applause.  The audience especially appreciated the efforts for promotion of education in the country’s remote and less-developed regions.  
He was welcomed by students and the staff and presented flowers and a plaque for his valuable contributions in the field of education. He also addressed the students and staff on the importance of Education in Islam. He briefed them about teaching technique and education models adopted at the AIOU.  
Dr. Sangi also visited Wisconsin University and addressed where he addressed the South Asia Conference, highlighting the AIOU’s role in promoting distance learning system in the region.

AIOU approves procedures for re-registration of the students in COL MBA/MPA (Executive) Programme

Islamabad – 29th October 2013 “Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has approved the procedure for re-registration of the students in COL MBA/MPA (Executive) Programme, the students will submit the application for re-registration along-with documentary evidence for being late in completing the degree program”
This was announced by Dr. Syed Hassan Raza, Chairman, Department of Business Administration, AIOU.
The facility of re-registration, Dr. Hasan Raza said will only be provided to those students who have completed their course work and are in the process of research project.
The department will assess the application and verify for the re-registration, the same will be forwarded to Director Admissions for verification of fee and admission in the research project course, after verifications of the fee and admission, the Director Admissions will forward the application to the Controller of Exams for further pre-requisites for the issuane of transcript/degree, he added.
Dr. Hassan further said that amounting to Rs. 15,340/-  in connection with fee for six (06) credits (equal to course fee) and fee for re-registration and processing will be charged for re-registration from the students.

ISLAMABAD, Oct.28: Vice Chancellor Allama Iqbal Open University Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi visited the world famous, Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, New Jersey and discussed with the lab’s officials about the possibilities of bilateral cooperation in research work in field of science and technology.
The Bell Lab is world's premier Research & Development institution with 13 the Nobel Prize recipients - the most of any institution in the world. He was given an official Bell Labs Showcase tour by a senior member of Technical Staff Dr. Carl Nuzman. He was briefed about various research and development activities and laboratories, says a message received here Monday. 
Dr. Sangi who is currently in the United States on the invitation of American Institute of Pakistan Studies was shown some most famous scientific inventions including the original telephone, first transistor, Telstar Satellite, Fiber Optic Cables and Laser, motion video which were all invented in Ball Labs.

Allama Iqbal Open University exams to be started today

Islamabad – 27th  October 2013 “Final exams of Matric, FA/F.Sc and BA programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 of the Allama Iqbal Open University(AIOU) will start today (Monday 28th October) across the country simultaneously”
This was announced by Controller of Exams, AIOU Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi. He said that Roll Number Slips have been sent by post to all the enrolled students at their given addresses. The students can also download their roll number slips from website www.aiou.edu.pk of the University, he added.
Dr. Niazi said that 650 exams centers have been set-up across the country for conducting these exams.
Controller of Exams has advised those students who have not received their Roll No. Slips so far to contact the nearest Regional Office of the University or Abid Hussain Satti, Deputy Controller of Exams (Conduct) personally or at his Ph.No. 051-9250051, 9057648 for issuance of Duplicate Roll No Slip.  For duplicate Roll No Slip students are required to bring two passport size photographs duly attested by the gazetted officer, he added.

The students must read the instructions mentioned on Roll No. Slip carefully before entering into the Examination Center, Dr. Niazi said.

AIOU sets up separate Directorate to regulate Matric, FA and BA level programs

ISLAMABAD, OCT. 23: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has decided to set up a full-fledged separate Directorate to regulate and supervise its secondary, Intermediate and Bachelor levels programs.
It will work as permanent department under faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities to streamline the education, relating to under-graduate programs. The concept, objectives and working plan of the separate Directorate were thoroughly discussed at a senior officers’ level meeting held here on Wednesday at the University’s main campus. Dr. Rashid A. Naeem, dean Faculty of social Sciences, presided over the meeting.
The Directorate will formally start working after the approval the competent authority. It will coordinate in maintaining uniformity in academic standard of the relevant programs, bringing them at par other boards of Secondary and intermediate education.
It will also maintain liaison with Inter Board Committee of Chairmen for attestation and accreditation of certificates issued at Matric FA and BA levels. The Directorate will monitor existing curricular, slybus, and schemes of students in order to further improve them and bring uniformity as par with the prevailing academic requirements.
The committee was told that the Vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi has already approved the idea of establishing an independent Board for conducting under-graduate level programs in comprehensive and transparent manner.
It was agreed that a program coordinator will be appointed for each Matric/FA and BA program. It was clarified that admission and examination system of such programs will keep working as per existing procedure. Lecture Social Science Ms. Sadia Aziz was assigned the task to finalize the proposals, in consultation with other relevant departments for formally setting up the Board as early as possible.
Addressing the meeting Dr. Rashid A. Naeem said that the AIOU is mainly focusing on providing best possible educational facilities to its students by upgrading and streamlining the existing distance learning system. He hoped that the separate directorate for under-graduate education will serve the interest of the students.

Islamabad – 22nd  October 2013 “Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has setup 650 exams centers across the country for its Matric, FA/F.Sc and BA exams for the Semester Spring, 2013”
This was announced by Controller of Exams, AIOU Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi. He said that final exams of Matric, FA/F.Sc and BA programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 will start from October 28.

Roll Number Slips, he said have already been sent by post to all the enrolled students at their given address. The students can also download their roll number slips from website www.aiou.edu.pk of the University.

Islamabad – 19th  October 2013 Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has scheduled its final exams of MS, M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 from Monday 21st October, 2013 across the country simultaneously.
This was announced by Dr. Hamid Khan Niazi, Controller of Exams, AIOU. The Roll No. slips, he said have been dispatched to all the eligible/enrolled students at their given addresses by Postal Mail Service.  Those students who have not received their Roll No. Slips so far are advised to contact the nearest Regional Office of the University or Abid Hussain Satti, Deputy Controller of Exams (Conduct) personally or at his Ph.No. 051-9250051, 9057648 for issuance of Duplicate Roll No Slip.
For duplicate Roll No Slip students are required to bring two passport size photographs duly attested by the gazetted officer.  Roll No. Slips along with Date Sheet are also being placed on AIOU website www.aiou.edu.pk for the convenience of students.
Controller of Exams, Dr. Niazi further said that final exams of Matric, FA and BA level programmes for the Semester Spring, 2013 will start from October 29 while Master level exams will be started from November 18 across the country simultaneously.
            All students are also advised in their own interest to read the instructions mentioned on Roll No. Slip carefully before entering into the Examination Center.
